Which POS systems run on an iPad fleet?

Square, TouchBistro and Lightspeed Restaurant all run on iPadOS. Toast does not — Toast builds its own Android-based hardware, so an iPad fleet is not compatible with it. That single fact decides more Chicago restaurant device orders than anything else on this page, and it is worth confirming before you buy hardware.

What a restaurant fleet actually contains

Almost nobody orders one type of device. A typical Chicago full-service restaurant fleet looks like this:

  • Front-of-house terminals — full-size iPads on fixed stands at the pass, bar and host station. These run all day and want the larger screen.
  • Handhelds for tableside — smaller units carried by servers for ordering and payment at the table. Weight and one-handed grip matter far more than storage capacity here.
  • Kitchen display units — mounted screens replacing ticket printers. Heat, steam and grease are the design constraints, not processing power.
  • Host and waitlist stands — customer-facing, so this is where the small number of new rather than refurbished devices usually goes.
  • Spares — at least one per five deployed units in a restaurant. This is not padding; it is the difference between a broken terminal and a broken service.

The hardware that is not the iPad

The devices are usually less than half the fleet cost, and the other half is what gets forgotten in budgeting. A complete restaurant order includes:

  • Stands and mounts — counter stands for terminals, wall or hood mounts for kitchen displays. Square's own stand is the obvious pairing on Square deployments.
  • Card readers — contactless and chip readers, one per payment point, sourced from your processor.
  • Rugged cases — mandatory on handhelds. A server carrying an uncased iPad through a service is a replacement device on a schedule.
  • Charging — a charging station or cart for handhelds, so devices are not dying mid-shift on a shared cable behind the bar.
  • Receipt printers and cash drawers — where your platform still uses them.

How iPads fail in kitchens

Worth knowing before you spec, because the failure modes are predictable and mostly preventable:

  1. Drops from the pass. The most common single cause. A rugged case with corner protection turns most of these from a replacement into a scratch.
  2. Grease ingress at the ports. Kitchen air is oily. Port covers and a case that seals the charging port extend life measurably.
  3. Thermal throttling near heat. A screen mounted above a line will slow down and eventually shut off. Mount position matters more than device spec.
  4. Battery death on handhelds. Double shifts kill batteries faster than anything else. Plan charging as infrastructure, not as an afterthought.
  5. Screen damage from wet hands and cleaning products. A bundled screen protector is a two-dollar answer to a several-hundred-dollar problem.
